With its locations throughout Germany that form a network, the Balu und Du mentorship program enriches elementary school children’s lives through extracurricular activities. Socially-minded young adults volunteer to mentor a child for at least one year. By devoting personal attention to their little buddies and actively structuring recreational activities, they help kids find their place in society, grow and learn how to overcome everyday challenges. Our mentors, who are between 18 and 30 years old, are known as Baloos. The elementary school children they take under their wings are called Mowglis. Baloos are usually students attending university, college, vocational school or are in their final years at high school. Alternatively, they may be association or club members. Baloo groups are closely supervised by a coordinator.
Our concept in a nutshell:
- One child
- Once a week
- For one to three hours
- Over at least one year.
Researchers have also taken an interest in Balu und Du. Their studies show that children who participate in Balu und Du are 20 percent more likely to start high school on a stronger academic footing.
